Always a conversation that causes plenty of argument in the FBS offices, but a bet we love to get involved in every four years is who will be the top goal scorer at the world cup and who will take home the golden boot. Here is our shortlist of 10 candidates who we feel will be in the running:
- Neymar – Brazil – has already scored 27 goals for Brazil and is only 22 yrs old. He won the Golden Ball at the Confederations Cup and he has to just be our favourite to win this Golden Boot at this year’s competition. We give him a 14% chance of winning.
- Lionel Messi – Argentina – he could well be instrumental in driving Argentina to win the tournament and with two of his teammates also in the list he is bound to be amongst the goals and we fancy him to lead the competition as top goal scorer for his team. We give him a 12% Chance of winning and make him clear 2nd favourite.
- Luis Suarez – Uraguay – had a stunning season with Liverpool and won player of the year. He is probably amongst the best strikers in the World. He has a great strike partner for Uraguay in Edinson Cavani. Only question mark is his recent injury scare – but if fit and ready we rate his chances at 10% of taking the Golden Boot.
- Cristiano Ronaldo – Portugal – the Portugal Captain and Real Madrid’s goal machine he seems to drag Portugal on his own at times through competitions. If they can stay in the tournament until the latter stages he has a strong chance. We rate him with a 7% chance.
- Eden Hazard – Belgium – had a great season with Chelsea and with Benteke out due to injury Eden has a chance to shine. We give him a 5% chance.
- Sergio Aguero – Argentina – Has had a great season for Man City and has got to be in our Top 10 and we rate him as a 5% chance of finishing top scorer in this year’s competition.
- Fred – Brazil – likely to lead the line for the host nation and he played a cracker in the Confederations Cup – winning the silver shoe. Another with around a 5% chance.
- Robin Van Persie – Holland – finalists in 2010, the dutch will be keen to avenge their defeat and Van Persie will spearhead the attack – we put his chances at 4%.
- Gonzalo Higuain – Argentina – the third Argentinian player to make the list and may be the dark horse if he shows the form he has for Napoli. 4% chance of winning the Golden Boot.
- Mesut Ozil – Germany – is considered by many to be the most likely German player to win the golden boot at the World Cup 2014. He has scored 17 times for Germany but looking at this list, he is hard to fancy – 3% chance of winning the Golden Boot.
Our bet will be on Lionel Messi to lift the Golden Boot in Brazil – So take advantage of the bet below
